Welcome to Class 1
All About us
General Information
Our aim is to help and support children so they develop to their fullest potential academically, socially, emotionally and into healthy well-beings, enabling each child to grow in confidence and be able to fully participate in everything that goes on in the wider community with confidence.
In Class 1, we follow a broad and balanced curriculum to allow our children to be successful learners, develop independence and be responsible citizens. We are ambitious in Class 1, we want children to develop positive relationships with children and adults, this will then allow them to be confident individuals ready to be successful in the next stages of their lives
Class 1 follow the Read Write Inc phonics scheme which teaches the children the sounds in English, the letters that represent them and how to form the letters when writing. Read Write Inc phonics includes reading books written using only the letters they have learnt at each level, with addition to a small number of tricky words which are separately taught.
Class 1 have PE on a Tuesday afternoon and we go for swimming lessons on a Friday morning during the summer term. We have a music specialist on a Wednesday afternoon who supports the delivery of our music curriculum. Our kitchen time is a Thursday afternoon. During the year, we will cook sweet and savoury items, looking at how to prepare food safely and hygienically, as well as looking at healthy options.
As a school we also have two mini buses, which we try to use as much as possible during the school year to experience capital culture.
English
In Class 1 we aim to teach our English Curriculum using a variety of books, which include fiction and non-fiction. These are some of the books we will be using; The Stickman, Zog, The Gingerbread Man, Dear Green Peace, Owl babies to name a few. In English children will develop writing skills as well as reading skills. Some of the skills that will be a focus during our lessons are; sentence structure, finger spaces, punctuation, hand writing, applying phonic knowledge to help spell words. Children will learn these skills through a range of well-planned activities which include; group work, role play, research, writing postcards, recipes, diary entries, retelling stories, prediction to name a few.
Maths
As a school we follow the White Rose long term plan, encouraging children to develop their learning using the concrete – pictoral – abstract approach (CPA). Children are given the opportunity to work with physical objects to help build an understanding of what they are doing. On a morning, children complete ‘Morning Maths’ work, normally focusing on a number-based objective. In class 1 throughout the year we will be constantly revisiting skills taught for example; number bonds to 10/20, doubles, halves and addition and subtraction, we will be extending our depth of knowledge by working through reasoning and problem solving tasks with the support of teaching staff.
